Launch of Love Not Hate report on hate crimes

The groundbreaking report – Hate Crimes against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) People in South Africa, 2016 – was launched on 29 November in Pretoria by OUT LGBT Well-being and the Love Not Hate campaign.The event, held at the Alliance Francaise in Sunnyside, was attended by OUT staff, activists, representatives from civil society groups, and journalists. OUT’s Director Dawie Nel introduced the proceedings and was followed by speakers Steve Letsike, Director of Access Chapter 2, and Lerato Phalakatshela, Hate Crime Manager at OUT and spokesperson for the Love Not Hate campaign.After the report’s results were presented by Phalakatshela, a panel discussion on the subject of hate crimes and discrimination was presented.Panelists included Juan Nel, from the Hate Crimes Working Group; Happy Phaleng, from the Khula Youth Network; and Norman Taku, Deputy Director of the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria.
